Derev – Troubled Mind

Derev – Troubled Mind

Releasedate: 26-03-2025

Derev is a Canadian Progressive Rock formation. They guys recently released their album “Troubled Mind”.

Musically, Troubled Mind showcases Derev’s sound, incorporating elements such as Middle Eastern instruments like the darbuka and cajón, as well as electronic textures. This fusion enriches their progressive rock foundation, drawing comparisons to bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree.

The album’s concept delves into various psychological states, from cognitive immobility to schizophrenia and complicated grief. Each track serves as a narrative that invites listeners into the complexities of the human psyche. For instance, “Buried Voice” opens the album with a seven-minute epic that transitions from a traditional structure to a dynamic prog rock piece, symbolizing the internal struggle between confronting and suppressing one’s inner truths. “Room 9” intensifies this theme, depicting the experience of schizophrenia with relentless energy and a signature that mirrors the protagonist’s disoriented state. “A Trace Within” offers a melancholic portrayal of prolonged grief.

One of the tracks that stand out is opener “Buried Voice”. This track sets the tone both thematically and musically. It starts with a relatively traditional structure before unfolding into a more expansive, progressive soundscape. Musically, it evolves dynamically, almost like a journey through the mind itself.

In summary, Derev ‘s Troubled Mind is a compelling release that combines technical prowess with deep emotional insight, offering listeners an immersive journey, lyrically as well as musically.
