The Swedish Dark Tranquility does not really require introduction. With many successful albums on their name and some extensive touring, they have crossed paths of the majority of metalheads at some point at least. This year a new album from their hands is becoming available. “ Endtime Signals” is available now.
Now Dark Tranquility has made their name in Melodic Death so clear that they have become part of the few that describes the genre. So to say, it may be hard to have an album that surprises you at that point. Yet the Swedes have made that happen with “Endtime Signals”. A sound that does not stray far from their familiar way of composing but is executed in a way it seems to step above what you heard from them before. Every detail they have put into their songs is thought extensively. Some songs are a bit faster than usual, having their new drummer take the lead a bit in that, but it is for those who take their time for it to notice what kind of impact that brings to their sound.
Combine that with the theme that you can extract from the album title clearly and you know the sense of urgency that you can feel while listening to this album. The tracks that you find in the tracklist have influences from diverse ranges, but the band makes it come together quite nicely. The whole flows easily when listening and when you start noticing the differences the albums appear to be very vibrant.
It is the wild “Unforgivable” where the energy comes out so strongly, but it is also “ One Of Us Is Gone” where the band shows themselves from within. Variation is key and this album delivers that.
Dark Tranquility have made great albums before, that scored extensively. A Grammy even. But with “ Endtime Signals” they seem to have taken it a step further even. One of the albums that will end up high in the yearlist! Safe bet for your money, get it.
