Devin Townsend, a versatile and multifaceted Canadian musician, burst onto the scene in 1995 as a member of Strapping Young Lad with “Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing.” His musical journey has since encompassed diverse projects, ranging from The Devin Townsend Band to The Devin Townsend Project. Presently, his creative output centers on his solo career, showcased by his recent 21st studio album “Lightwork,” which was released a mere eight months ago.
Famed for his impressive musical skill, Devin Townsend recently introduced the latest addition to his Devolution Series, titled “Devolution Series #3: Empath Live In America.” This release documents his early 2020 tour, abruptly curtailed due to the pandemic’s onset.
The album commences with characteristic playfulness in “Intro,” a hallmark of Townsend’s live recordings. Noteworthy is “Evermore” from his 2019 release “Empath,” contributing a unique touch to the setlist through intricate melodies that captivate listeners.
Prominent tracks like “March Of The Poozers” and “Why?” take the spotlight, showcasing Townsend’s musical aptitude and vocal range. Moments of unexpected humor are interspersed, reinforcing Townsend’s distinct stage presence. While certain sections sporadically experience a loss of momentum, Townsend’s connection with his audience remains a standout aspect, ensuring a distinctive encounter for ardent enthusiasts of his artistry.
The commencement of the track “Fuck Around Section” bursts forth with robust guitar riffs, establishing a potent ambiance before transitioning into a darker motif that permeates the composition.
The mellower facet of Townsend and his ensemble emerges in “Gigpig Jam,” embodying elements of blues and jazz within each guitar riff and drumbeat. The track’s peak and most powerful moment is reached with an emotionally charged guitar solo and an impassioned drum performance, encapsulating the core of their live expertise.
“Devolution Series #3: Empath Live In America” stands as evidence of Townsend and his band’s profound enjoyment of live performances. This album affords them the chance to showcase their undeniable musical proficiency, crafting an exceptional auditory voyage for listeners.
