Release date: 06.05.2022 Label: Silent Future Recordings
Swedish dark-synth band De Arma released an EP called “Nightcall”. This is their first ever EP, they have 2 full-length records from last year and 2013. Even though they had black metal roots and influence in their early works around 2009-2011, this EP is synth based and rather indie alternative.
Their sound is somewhere between shoegaze, postpunk, and The Mission type of 80s new wave vibe with some dreamy female and also Harry McVeigh (White Lies) type of vocals. First track Shame Drifter is a good display of their whole style.
It’s quite a lengthy EP which is 22 min. journey into this postpunk revival haze. After Dark, You’re There is the longest track with some cool layers. And it’s darker in atmosphere, so you can feel the Scandinavian energy projecting itself onto the track. Sunset Dreams immediately made me think of shoegaze classics closing the EP on a more positive note. Female vocals blending with Andreas’ voice gives the whole dreamy electronics feel of the 80’s.
Overall, this EP by De Arma transports us back to 30 plus years ago. While soundwise nothing’s newly invented under the sun, it’s a fresh interpretation of so many people’s favorite music era.
