29-08-2009 Disco Ensemble

Supports: Neufvoin; Venue: Virgin Oil, Helsinki (Finland)
By: Nina Mende

Tonight I went back to merry old Virgin Oil to see two gorgeous bands: Neufvoin and Disco Ensmeble.

Neufvoin is a Finnish alternative/psychedelic indie band from Kuopio. Their sound reminded of Lapko, Rubik and Dredg. The five Finns still seemed a little shy on stage but that impression disappeared quite fast. They prepared the audience slowly for Disco Ensemble. During the first two songs the venue still seemed a little empty, but filled up very fast till it was totally crowded. The audience enjoyed the music a lot. The performance lasted for about an hour. They sang in English but didn’t talk too much with the audience. The music was psychedelic, taking your mind and taking it on a journey. Not really music to simply dance to but to actually think about. Really nice and ambitious. Check them out!

Up next was Disco Ensemble, the audience went wild screaming and singing along, dancing and jumping. Disco Ensemble are a Finnish post-hardcore/indie punk band, originating from Pori founded in 1996. They’ve been noted for their energetic sound and rhythm, original neon guitar riffs and electrifying electronic synthesizer sounds. Virgin Oil was totally crowded but people still found room to move. Disco Ensemble played for about 1 ½ hours plus encore. They played all hits, old and new songs. You could feel that the four Finns were extremely happy to play “home”. The band jumped around on stage as usual, and nobody was standing still off stage either. Disco Ensemble connected to the audience a lot and the fans appreciated it a lot. It was a wonderful evening at Virgin Oil.
