05-08-2009 The Foreshadowing

Venue: Tivoli Oudegracht, Utrecht (The Netherlands)
By: Sabine van Gameren

The Italian doom metal band The Foreshadowing made its way to The Netherlands together with compatriots Lacuna Coil. They were playing in Tivoli, Utrecht as being the openers of the Summer Darkness festival that brings darkness to town every year.

The venue was pretty much filled up by either people who came specially for either one of the bands or people who had a wristband for the whole festival. The Foreshadowing made their entree while many visitors had no idea what to expect of them. The band released their debut album in 2007 and are currently working on their new release. One of the very first songs they played was the title song of their debut “Days of Nothing” which quite set the tone. Music wise they brought a set full of dark, emotional doom. Theatric elements and calming, almost reassuring tones float mainly over the heads of the audience as they responded hold back in the start. Seems like they needed to see some more before the impression is made. Later, the band played two songs of their new album, telling it was the first time these new songs were performed live. When being halfway to the set the audience seemed to get more into the mood for this music, clapping along when the band asks them too. The show ended with a cover version of “Russians” by Sting. The band left the stage leaving the audience in a two-camp whether they liked it or not. Those who are fond of doom will be mostly impressed seeing a performance like The Foreshadowing made, for the typical Lacuna Coil fans it might have been a shock to see something so different.
