Eternal Tears of Sorrow – Children of the Dark Waters

Releasedate: 22-05-2009; Label: Massacre Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Eternal Tears of Sorrow is a gothic metal band from Finland. “Children of the Dark Waters” is their sixth album.

The band was formed 1994 and actually decided to quit in 2001, but in 2004 the band decided they wanted to continue with the band. With members of Kalmah, For My Pain…, Tarot and Catamenia in the band, you can say the band has some name out there to keep going. Through the years the band changed style as well, but with this sixth album they bring a bit dreamy, gothic metal. Dreamy, because clean vocals are soft and emotional. The more raw vocals makes a bit of reference to the graspy Lordi vocals.
Melodic metal must be mentioned here as well, maybe rather than only typical gothic as it might mislead a bit. Some songs feature female vocals who do underline the gothic principle. The credits for those go to Miriam Renvåg (Ram-Zet) and Heidi Parviainen (Amberian Dawn). I must admit that I prefer the songs without the female vocals, as those song are closer to the total feeling that comes with this album, when you observed the artwork and seen the lyrics.

Nevertheless, “Children of the Dark Waters” is an album that should be in your collection if you are into the gothic metal genre. It is not an album that will be on top forever, but it won’t end up catching dust in a dark corner either.
