Axis Powers – Marching Towards Destruction

Releasedate: 15-05-2009; Label: Pulverised Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Swedish Death Metal act Axis Powers released their second album “Marching Towards Destruction” after an hiatus of 4 years.

The band, formed in 1997, contains three members of the band Suicidal Winds. In Axis Powers it is all about war. Some pure old school Death Metal is what they present with intriguing riffs. Take the sixth song “Slowly to Decay” and hear some excellent work by Peter Haglund. To give an idea of what the sound is about, take some of compatriots Entombed and Grave. The vocals of Mathias Johansson are deep growling, maybe could have had some more attitude. Drums are often boring, and disappearing in the whole mix. Certainly a missed opportunity.

The album ends with us being bombed. Total destruction, or should they keep on playing with their plastic soldiers? The war theme came forward mostly in the start of the album and flattened out after a couple of songs, but in the last song we got reminded again to what the ideology behind these aggressions were. I don’t feel totally destructed, maybe slightly ruined. There is not a victory for Axis Powers yet, history repeats? But I assume the guys will strike again, not willing to forget about their desire to conquer.
