Sons of Seasons – Gods of Vermin

Releasedate: 30-04-2009; Label: Napalm Records
By: Elvira Visser

The intro “The Place Where I Hide” is very classical, the tone it sets bring you to the corners of your imagination. It could be easily used as a soundtrack for a movie. When other instruments join in “Gods of Vermin” you know this is a symphonic metal band. This time, no female that used her angelic voice but Hennig Basse (Metalium) is fulfilling this job.

The band is formed by Oliver Palotai (Doro & Kamelot) when he wanted to use his skills and creativity as a musician and composer, creating a playground for himself without limitations.
Together with Daniel Schild and Luca Princiotta, Oliver was a member of, the around Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley band, Blaze. When things did not worked out with their management Oliver thought the time was there to start his own band. He also gathered Tijs Vanneste (Ocean of Sadness) who was the first vocalist of Sons of Seasons, but did not made it to their debut album due to his work duties. However some of the tracks on this album are inspired in part by his ideas. Oliver luckily met Henning Basse when being on tour in Japan. They found out they shared some common ground while talking about music and their ideas. Fusing a passion for metal, jazz and classical music, creating the sound of Sons of Seasons.

Things you consistently hear is the pounding drum, the vocal line and the important keys in the Sons of Seasons sound. This album consist of symphonic metal with a lot of bombastic moments. Simone Simons (Epica) is guest vocalist on this production and makes especially the track “Wintersmith” sugar sweet. The band shows it self from a more powerful side with “Belial’s Tower” and “Third Moon Rising” where the guitars and double bass are more present.
