Rubik – Dada Bandits

Releasedate: 01-04-2009; Label: Fullsteam Records
By: Nina Mende

Rubik is a Finnish indie pop/rock band. The band played their first live show in 2003 and released a debut EP “People Go Missing” in the beginning of 2005 through New Music Community. The band’s first full-length album, titled “Bad Conscience Patrol” was released in March 2007. Following the release, the band toured in Finland and the US as well as some European festivals. Now they have their new album “Data Bandits” released.

The artwork on the album is very colorful and retro like. The lyrics in the booklet are handwritten; pictures of animals, nature and mankind are literally mixed up in it as well. You can stare at it forever. The music is very flowery and spreading happiness. The melodies are hip and odd; it changes in the middle of the songs. The voice is soft and quite high pitched. “Wasteland” is a quite slow and thoughtful song. “Data Bandits” is a smooth album, the music makes you dream at times and I would describe it as a mix between The Crash, Damn Seagulls and Lapko. The music contains some jazzy elements. “Karhu Junassa” (the bear in the train) is sung in English just like every other song although it has a Finnish name. It’s a very colorful song as well. Some songs are very slow others very lively and danceable. “Data Bandit” is a very great album for everybody who needs something far off the mainstream music.
