Mando Diao is a garage rock band from Borlänge, Sweden founded in 1995. Band members came and went and four years later the rest of the current line-up decided to take that project more seriously. The band got their breakthrough with the release of the album Hurricane Bar. The song God Knows was featured in FIFA 06. Their main fan base is in Sweden, Germany, and Japan.
Now the band has their fifth studio album “Give Me Fire” released. This album has the typical Mando Diao sound and beat as well, but it also reminds of ABBA, Beatles and other bands from this time quite a lot. There is trumpet and synthesizers on some songs, others sound like live versions. Many songs are slow and quite thoughtful, spreading a feeling of the 60s and 50s in a way.
The songs shade into each other extremely so this album is not meant to be played in random without confusion. That is maybe also because why this album contains not as many extremely catchy songs that get stuck in your head forever, like Mando Diao usually has — at least not at first sight. When listening to it more than once, some songs will definitely get stuck. Mine were of course “Dance With Somebody”, “You Got Nothing on Me”, and “Maybe Just Sad”. That doesn’t mean that this album is bad, no. It is a great album, just slightly different from what one or the other might have expected, and interesting as well.
So enjoy the new tunes by these Swedes.
