Wizard – Thor

Releasedate: 30-01-2009; Label: Massacre Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Wizard, announced as being “a synonym for heavy metal”, comes from Germany.

After many years and various albums they are now on Massacre Records and they released the album “Thor”.
Wizard has besides the heavy metal also some power metal elements in their music, mainly in the vocals and lyrics.

As “Thor” showed me a couple of songs I found that the songs are more or less an extension of each other. The riffs stop for a second at the end of one song, to continue straight away when the new song starts as it seems.
The instrumental work in “Thor” is very balanced. All of the instruments seem to have the perfect harmony in the music to support the story of the vocals. I found it very attractive that no ones ego is ever dominating here. Quite refreshing!
Lyrical, the band seems to fall back on the gods as a routine. “Thor” is known as the god of thunder, while they chose to obey Odin (the godfather) before. Will Wizard keep this in as being their tradition?

Overall the album is a nice one, the title “a synonym for heavy metal” is a title they are worth.
