Evocation – Dead Calm Chaos

Releasedate: 31-10-2008; Label:Cyclone Empire / Soulfood
By: Sabine van Gameren

Evocation comes from Sweden, a country that has quite a reputation when in comes to Metal. The band plays old school death metal.

In their latest release “Dead Calm Chaos” they worked with compatriots Anders Björler (At The Gates/The Haunted) and Dan Swanö (Bloodbath / Edge of Sanity) to spice up the sound.
“Dead Calm Chaos” an album in which I often wondered what happened with originality. Very nice riffs, rhythms to love, strong melodies but nothing of it is new under the sun. If that means “old school” then yes, this album totally succeeded, but still I wonder how originality can bring more out of this. This does not step away from the fact that the album is a good one to listen, it is one of those albums that you will put on regularly.
The song “Antidote” (9th on the album) is one that jumps out as being a bit different to the other songs on the album, mostly due to the melody that is just gorgeous. Evocation pleases all the addicts of old school metal, this is what they should go for. The album is one to take in case of emergency, in that desperate search of staying the same, stay young by doing what you did when you were young.
With this being said I can conclude that I am very curious of what the band brings out in the next couple of years, since the old school sound surely do work for me.
