The Rasmus – Black Roses

Releasedate: 26-09-2008; Label: Universal / Playgrounds

The Rasmus, after three years they have now and finally released their new album „Black Roses“. Their 7th album in 14 years of band history into which I don’t have to get into any further, do I? Their biggest hits were “F-f-f-f-falling” and “In The Shadows”, songs that made them known worldwide not just in Finland.

So here it is, long awaited by their fans: “Black Roses”. A beige-white cover and a pitch black CD, the inner pages are having the style of astrology scripts and scribbles from the 30s or earlier, the lyrics written in old English letters. The band still has their logo with the leaves. Aki (drummer) and Lauri (singer) are blond again. Beginning listening to the album the first song sounded different than The Rasmus usually sounded. The songs are easy to sing along, some songs are quite slow and melancholic, others faster and peppier. The music is somewhere between rock and pop. “Justify” is a quite sad love song. The chorus melody of “Your Forgiveness” reminds me of another song but I can’t think of which one. This song is very suitable for radio. “You Got It Wrong” is quite rocky. The beginning of “Lost And Lonely” has this tragic classical sound which you can always find in dramatic operas before something terrible will happen. This sound reoccurs after the choruses for a short while. “The Fight” has fast guitar riffs and drum beats in it which raises your adrenaline level and make you ready to stand up. “Dangerous Kind” is a very electronic and funky song. The last song is totally slow and thoughtful. A melancholic closing.

The album is a whole story and reminds of a soundtrack to a live, details were thought through and reactions planned. You can tell that the band put a lot of effort in this album and it was worth it. A great new album of these four Finns. Lets see when they start again heading for endless tours.
