Serenity – Fallen Sanctuary

Releasedate: 29-08-2008; Label: Napalm Records
By: Elvira Visser

Serenity formed back in 2001 as a melodic metal band with the right amount of progressive influences. After establishing themselves with their first demo three of the founding members left the band. Since 2004 the line up of Serenity consists of Georg Neuhauser, Thomas Buchberger, Simon Holzknecht, Mario Hirzinger and Andreas Schipflinger.

The production of their new album started in December in Munich and they completed the album “Fallen Sanctuary” in May 2008 to be released in August. Serenity is a symphonic metal band that delivers catchy melodic tracks. At some points it can be said they play strong power metal, progressive at times creating songs full of melody and orchestral parts accompanied by great guitar riffs.

With this album Serenity presents tight songs with catchy refrains, a tight rhythm section and great vocals. Emotional and still very powerful, exactly what you need for this type of music. To enrich the symphonic atmosphere Serenity worked together with Oliver Philipps (Everon) who took care of the diverse orchestral parts. Georg Neuhauser takes care of the vocals and shows he is a very capable singer. To make the vocal melodies stand out even more they used a choir to make the sound of the harmonies more massive. Delivering a strong album.

Sandra Schleret from Elis appears as a guest vocalist on the track: “Fairytales”, that would fit in a rock opera or musical perfectly. It is a beautiful song. “Velatum” is a very strong song, with a capella parts that make you shiver. The keyboard plays an essential part in the Serenity sound. But they know how to find a good mix between keyboard and guitars. Many tracks are built up in a fine way, showing pounding metal drums or outstanding guitar riffs, but never demanding more attention than Georgs voice. “Sheltered (By the Obscure)” has a great intro that starts with a flute.
The orchestral sound scape is very strong on this track. I can say a lot about the other tracks but simply said I just like them all.
