Daylight dies is a band from North Carolina, USA. In 1999 they released their first demo and now in 2008 they release “Lost To The Living” which is their third full length album.
The band plays dark, melodic doom metal. Comparisations to the nowadays standard comparisation bands in this genre (Paradise Lost, Anathema, Katatonia) are easily made. Though, I would say you hear influences from Fields Of The Nephilim and for example the first Beseech album.
The album contains strongly composed songs, bringing you in the doom mood. Definitely a pro, since the band had chosen to release this album in the summer, while the sun is shining and everybody is happy.
Listening to the album brought my first surprise when arriving at the 6th song on the album “Woke Up Lost” which contains clean vocals (by bassist Egan O’Rourke). This in combination with the way the guitar is implemented in the song feels like a small light in the darkness. A little hope between those chapters of misery.
“Last Alone” is another song with these clean vocals. The way the song starts made me think of the part Jonas Renske (Katatonia) recorded for Ayreon, an Arjan Lucassen project.
It is slow, calm and once again the sound brings a little feeling of hope up in me.
The album closes with “The Morning Light”, which is a perfect summarize of what the album is about.
Overall Daylight Dies brings a good album, but I tend to put it aside for a while… when the sun is gone, and the daylight really dies. When the circumstances are there, this album will make some more impression.
