Milkbar – 20-12-2010

Interview with: Milkbar

It is December and the snow is getting more and more outside. Institutions warned people not to go out on the street if it is not needed. Public transportation ain’t working either and in the venue where I am are three local bands waiting for audience. Not exactly the perfect circumstances for a release party. It is 14.00 o’clock and the doors are opening, yet I am one of the firsts that actually are present. The bands are all walking around me nervous, calling friends, family and relatives to check if they can make it to the venue safely.

Milkbar is one local that will release their self-titled EP today. The band is playing together for about a year now and met via advertisement on the internet. All of them had been in other bands before. “All of them splitted, for diverse reasons” says Ralph, bassist of the band. His brother is doing the guitars in the band. From the start it has been clear that the band wanted to go in the direction of the Britrock as we know it from The Kooks, though it all came more solid when vocalist Chris Murphy entered the band.

The EP released today has been started when the band was rehearsing. “Someone knocked at the door, almost like how it is suppose to go in films” says Chris. It turned out to be producers that wanted to record the band. That is how the first two songs got recorded and the band was that satisfied with it, they decided to add another session and record some more songs.

When being asked about their inspirations they immediately bring up: misery and alcohol. “You have to get rid of your frustrations and emotions, otherwise you end up as a serial killer or some guy that shoots on schools” they explain. One of them wisely asks if this will bring problems to say, realizing the strong quote.

Going on to the day they release it, the band says they can imagine that people rather stay home and watch a movie than struggling through the snow, but they hope that there will be people anyway, but the band also seem to have various plans for the future. In the first place they want to play a lot in the Netherlands, but the ambition to go abroad is there as well. They name Ireland as a potential country as one of them had been there with his previous band and has relatives living there to help out. As we are talking the band seem to remember someone from another band with which they could co-operate to get things going so it seems like the ambition is there and awake.
