Tegan and Sara – Sainthood

Releasedate: 29-10-2009; Label: Vapor/Sire/Superclose
By: Sabine van Gameren

Two sisters Tegan and Sara started to make indie pop music together on young age. Anno 2009 the Canadian ladies released their sixth full length album “Sainthood”.

The strongest part of this dynamic duo must be the fact that somehow they are fragile. Listening to the music, makes you think the girls have tiptoe-ed their way to the border and are balancing on their limits. The album sainthood is filled with songs that might be successful, but that is dependable on the visual art that they will present it with.
Their previous album came with a single “Back In Your Head” that was presented with a strong video, which is exactly what is needed to open up the music of Tegan and Sara to a wider audience. Most accessible song on this album is probable the song “Hell”.
Instrumental there is not much of a storm going on, they have chosen to keep things simple and sober. At some points I could have imagined a bit more bombastic elements would have spiced it all a bit up. Now the album might be a bit too calm and flat for an average listener. Take for example the song “Northshore” which has a slight dip of punk in it. That makes the album much more likely to put on repeat.

The album “Sainthood” is one where the fans will have to swallow a bit at first. After some more listening it is more likely to be adopted.
