Alexandra Burke – Overcome

Releasedate: 19-10-2009; Label: Syco
By: Sabine van Gameren

Alexandra Burke is a pop/R&B singer from the UK. “Overcome” is her debut album.

When reading that Alexandra Burke is a winner of the British X Factor television show, I was not really surprised. Mostly, because her album contains the song “Hallelujah” which also was released by the Dutch winner Lisa and probably various other X factor winners. Winning a contract with Syco (subsidized by Sony BMG) gives you certain benefits. Various artists on the label might be available for working together and a certain status is backing you up with it. Alexandra was fortunate to sing songs with Flo-Rida and Ne-Yo. These songs are not really the most powerful ones on the album, but are nice start with. They sense quite some of the simplicity that reigns through the whole album. The third song on the album “The Silence” is one that be more outstanding, due to some vocal diversities. Alexandra gives some power here that have not been heard before and won’t be found anywhere else in the album. Seems like it is really coming from the heart.

Overall there is a whole lot of sugar in this album, the continuously waiting for the spice is killing. Nevertheless it could have been much worse, Alexandra has a nice voice and is yet exploring her possibilities. On a next album, she will be more ready to put some killer hits, until then, we will deal with this one.
