Poets of The Fall, a.k.a POTF, is a Finnish rock band from Helsinki, Finland. The band has been around since 2003 and raised themselves up to being one of the most known poprock formations of their country. The last release of the Poets came out in 2012 but this year the band is back with another one: “Jealous Gods”.
Where Poets of the Fall has mainly been successful in their own country, the band has done several tours in other countries where their hitsingles have hot the grounds as well. With “Jealous Gods” the band seems to want to break the world a bit further for them and they might have exactly the right weapon to do so. For those who know the band may know exactly what to expect as the album gives exactly that what brought the guys up to now. They have their strong ballads in there, but also the popsongs accompanied with lyrics that may have bring just a little more than the average pop band. The words chosen maybe just a bit more comprehensive but with the catchiness that the band has in them you don’t have to waste much time in getting hooked. Here and there some of the songs become a bit too recognizable perhaps and you realize that the guys will have to be careful that this not becomes a trend. For a new listener to this formation the songs will however sound like strong a bit commercial poprock songs. Well written en catchy. Does the album have a new hitsong like for example “Carnival of Rust”? (which got covered by the Swedish Shining, a nice tip for our more Metal minded readers!) Hard to say. Their first single “Daze” has its potential but maybe needs just a tiny bit longer to grow there.
Altogether Poets of the Fall has nothing to worry about. In line with their tradition the band has released an excellent album full of Pop Rock songs. They are ready to break open some new markets and perhaps they will hit ground. Fans can safely buy the album knowing the constant quality of the band is maintained. For those who have not heard the band before it is a great chance to step in.
