Their albums Black Emotions, Souls Highway, Drama and Sunless Days established a distinctive identity that has kept them relevant long after the band’s original 2006 split. Now, ten years after My Darkness, Darkness, Beseech return with Future. Present. Past., bringing back the much-loved vocal pairing of Erik Molarin and Lotta Höglin.

From the opening Ambiguous Mind, the familiar combination of melancholy, melody and darkness is immediately recognisable, but the production gives the songs a contemporary clarity. Molarin and Höglin complement each other beautifully, their contrasting voices providing much of the album’s emotional character. Hesitation and Boundless Space lean into the band’s atmospheric side, while End This adds a little more weight without losing the melodic focus. Rather than trying to recreate an early-2000s sound note for note, Beseech seem to have taken the elements that worked best and allowed them to mature naturally.

What makes Future. Present. Past. particularly enjoyable is that it works best as an album rather than a collection of obvious singles. Melodies of Movement, Still Lost and Between Worlds maintain the reflective mood while giving the record enough variation to prevent it becoming predictable. There is plenty of darkness here, but Beseech have always understood that melancholy works best when contrasted with beauty, and that balance remains one of their greatest strengths. The Roxette cover The Sweet Hello, the Sad Goodbye fits surprisingly well into the atmosphereas well.

Future. Present. Past. is not an attempt to turn back the clock. Instead, Beseech have created an album that acknowledges their history while sounding comfortable in the present. The return of Molarin and Höglin is certainly significant, but the real achievement is that their reunion has produced something more substantial than nostalgia. For fans of gothic metal, dark rock and beautifully melancholic songwriting, this is a welcome and very convincing return.

Line up:

Erik Molarin – vocals

Lotta Höglin – vocals

Daniel Lindgren – bass

Jonas Strömberg – guitar

Manne Engström – guitar

Christian Silver – drums

Tracklist

Ambiguous Mind

Hesitation

Boundless Space

End This

Future.
