Since forming in 2016, the band has steadily built a strong reputation within the European underground through their combination of classic death metal, doom influences, and bleak atmospheric songwriting. Their 2024 album Icons of Ruin further refined that approach, offering a dense and oppressive sound rooted firmly in the traditions of early extreme metal while still feeling modern enough to stand on its own.

Live, Graceless focused less on speed and spectacle and far more on atmosphere and sheer weight. Their set unfolded like a slow-moving avalanche of thick riffs, deep growls, and punishing rhythm sections that continuously dragged the audience deeper into the band’s grim sonic landscape. Rather than chasing nonstop chaos, the performance thrived on tension and heaviness, allowing each riff enough space to fully hit the crowd before the next crushing section arrived.

The band’s stage presence matched the music perfectly. There was little unnecessary movement or over-the-top crowd interaction; instead, Graceless allowed the oppressive mood of the songs themselves to dominate the performance. That stripped-down approach worked exceptionally well in a festival setting where many other acts competed for attention through constant intensity or theatrics.

As the set progressed, more and more people gathered around the stage, clearly pulled in by the band’s massive sound and uncompromising atmosphere. Graceless may operate firmly within the old-school death metal tradition, but performances like this proved they are far more than a nostalgic throwback act. Their Into The Grave appearance delivered exactly the kind of dark, heavy experience many extreme metal fans came to the festival hoping to find.

<div class="wp-block-column class="wp-block-heading">Atmoran

Local Frisian metal act Atmoran brought a serious amount of energy to the Reaper Stage and quickly proved why the band has been gaining more attention within the Dutch underground scene. Formed in Dokkum in 2019, the group blends thrash metal, melodic death metal, and modern groove influences into a sound that feels both aggressive and surprisingly dynamic. Their music pulls inspiration from bands such as Lamb of God, Exodus, Sepultura, and Gojira, while still maintaining a clear identity of their own. Recent singles like WE FIGHT BACK! showed a band continuing to sharpen both their songwriting and live intensity.

Despite being one of the younger names on the lineup, Atmoran performed with the confidence and aggression of a far more established act. Their set balanced fast thrash-driven riffing with heavier groove-oriented sections and occasional melodic passages that prevented the performance from becoming one-dimensional. The audience response grew steadily throughout the show, with the pit becoming increasingly active as more people gathered around the stage.

What stood out most was the band’s raw enthusiasm. Every member looked fully committed from start to finish, creating a performance that felt honest, hungry, and genuinely exciting to watch. The combination of tight musicianship and energetic stage presence made it easy to understand why the band is developing a strong reputation on the Dutch live circuit.

For an early festival appearance, Atmoran delivered exactly what Into The Grave crowds tend to appreciate: riffs, intensity, and enough live energy to immediately wake up the entire area around the stage.

Rivers of Nihil

Progressive death metal outfit Rivers of Nihil delivered one of the most musically ambitious performances of the festival, blending technical precision with atmosphere and emotional depth in a way few modern extreme metal bands manage live. Over the years, the Pennsylvania-based group has steadily evolved far beyond straightforward technical death metal, incorporating progressive structures, ambient passages, and even jazz-influenced elements into their sound. Their self-titled 2025 album further expanded that identity, presenting a darker and more introspective approach while maintaining the crushing heaviness the band is known for.

From the beginning of the set, Rivers of Nihil created a dense and immersive atmosphere that immediately stood out from many of the day’s more direct and aggressive performances. Their songs constantly shifted between technical intensity, melodic tension, and expansive atmospheric passages, demanding full attention from the audience rather than simple passive enjoyment. Despite the complexity of the material, the performance never felt clinical or detached. Instead, the band managed to bring genuine emotion and momentum into even the most technically demanding sections.

One of the strongest aspects of the show was how seamlessly the band balanced brutality with atmosphere. Crushing riffs and relentless drumming flowed naturally into calmer and more melodic moments without disrupting the overall pacing of the set. That dynamic approach kept the performance engaging throughout and highlighted just how much Rivers of Nihil has evolved creatively over the years.

The crowd response reflected the band’s growing reputation within modern progressive death metal. While their material may not always aim for immediate accessibility, Rivers of Nihil proved once again that complexity and emotional impact can coexist perfectly in a live festival setting when executed at this level.

<img loading="lazy" Ordeal

Polish extreme metal force Dormant Ordeal delivered one of the most uncompromisingly intense performances of the day, bringing a suffocating mix of technical death metal, blackened atmosphere, and relentless aggression to the festival grounds. While perhaps still more of an underground name compared to some of the larger acts on the lineup, the band has steadily built a strong reputation within extreme metal circles thanks to releases such as 2023’s Tooth and Nail, an album praised for its dense songwriting, chaotic energy, and oppressive atmosphere.

From the moment the set began, Dormant Ordeal made it very clear that subtlety was not part of the plan. Blistering blast beats, dissonant riffing, and punishing vocals combined into a performance that felt absolutely relentless from start to finish. Yet beneath the overwhelming aggression was a surprising amount of precision and structure. The band’s technical ability allowed even the most chaotic sections to remain sharp and tightly controlled live.

What made the performance especially effective was the atmosphere surrounding it. Dormant Ordeal did not rely on theatrical presentation or excessive crowd interaction; instead, the sheer intensity of the music itself created a dark and almost hostile energy around the stage. The audience response reflected that perfectly, with dedicated extreme metal fans pushing forward while others watched in stunned fascination at the sheer sonic violence unfolding in front of them.

For casual listeners, the set may have felt overwhelming at times. For fans of modern extreme metal, however, Dormant Ordeal delivered exactly the kind of crushing and technically impressive performance they had hoped for. Their Into The Grave appearance proved that the Polish death metal scene continues to produce bands capable of delivering world-class brutality on stage.

Carach Angren

Dutch symphonic black metal outfit Carach Angren transformed the festival grounds into a theatrical horror show with one of the most visually and atmospherically distinctive performances of the weekend. Since emerging from the Netherlands in the early 2000s, the band has carved out a unique identity by combining black metal with cinematic orchestration, gothic horror aesthetics, and elaborate storytelling. Albums such as Franckensteina Strataemontanus and 2020’s Frankensteina Strataemontanus further strengthened their reputation for creating dark, theatrical concept-driven music that feels almost tailor-made for live performance.

From the moment the band entered the stage, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. Backed by ominous orchestral elements and haunting visuals, Carach Angren approached their set less like a traditional metal performance and more like a full horror experience unfolding in real time. The combination of furious blast beats, sharp tremolo riffs, and dramatic symphonic layers created an intense wall of sound that felt both chaotic and strangely cinematic.

Frontman Seregor proved to be the undeniable focal point throughout the set, commanding the stage with exaggerated theatrical movements and sinister charisma. Rather than simply performing songs, the band seemed determined to fully immerse the audience in their macabre world. That theatrical approach could easily have become overwhelming or gimmicky in a festival setting, but Carach Angren managed to balance spectacle and musicianship remarkably well.

The audience response throughout the performance showed exactly why the band has become such a recognizable name within symphonic black metal. Carach Angren offered something very different from many of the weekend’s more straightforward heavy acts: a performance built as much around atmosphere and storytelling as pure aggression and the result was one of the festival’s most memorable spectacles.

<figure class="wp-block-image Torture

Dutch brutal death metal veterans Severe Torture delivered exactly the kind of merciless sonic violence longtime extreme metal fans had been waiting for all day. Active since the late 1990s, the band has become one of the most respected names within the European brutal death metal scene, known for combining technical precision with relentless aggression and old-school brutality. Albums like Feasting on Blood and 2022’s Fisting the Sockets helped solidify Severe Torture’s reputation for creating uncompromising death metal that prioritizes intensity above all else.

Their Into The Grave performance wasted absolutely no time getting started. From the opening moments onward, the band launched into a nonstop assault of blast beats, razor-sharp riffing, and guttural vocals that immediately triggered chaos in front of the stage. The crowd response reflected exactly what one would expect during a Severe Torture set: violent pits, constant movement, and plenty of grinning death metal fans fully embracing the brutality unfolding around them.

What made the performance particularly impressive was how incredibly tight the band sounded live. Despite the sheer speed and aggression of the material, every transition and rhythmic shift landed with precision. Severe Torture approached the stage with the confidence of a band that has spent decades refining their craft, never needing gimmicks or excessive theatrics to keep the audience engaged.

The atmosphere throughout the set perfectly captured the raw spirit of classic death metal festivals: loud, sweaty, aggressive, and completely unapologetic. Severe Torture may not reinvent the genre, but performances like this demonstrate exactly why they remain such a respected and enduring force within European extreme metal.

Destruction

German thrash metal legends Destruction brought pure old-school aggression to Into The Grave with a performance that reminded everyone why they remain one of the defining names of European thrash metal. As part of Germany’s legendary “Teutonic Big Four” alongside Kreator, Sodom, and Tankard, Destruction helped shape the harsher and more aggressive side of thrash during the 1980s. Decades later, the band still sounds remarkably hungry live, continuing to deliver fast riffs, snarling vocals, and nonstop intensity with little interest in slowing down. Their 2022 album Diabolical proved that the group remains fully committed to the raw thrash metal sound that built their legacy in the first place.

From the very start of the set, the atmosphere in front of the stage exploded into chaos. Circle pits opened almost instantly while longtime fans loudly shouted along throughout the performance. Destruction approached the stage with zero subtlety and absolutely no wasted energy, blasting through their material at full speed while maintaining a level of sharpness many younger thrash bands would struggle to match live.

Frontman Schmier remained the undeniable driving force behind the performance, constantly pushing the energy higher while feeding off the crowd’s enthusiasm. The chemistry between the band members felt natural and aggressive, giving the entire set a raw and authentic atmosphere that perfectly suited the music.

In a festival lineup filled with both modern and experimental metal acts, Destruction served as a reminder of how effective straightforward thrash metal can still be when delivered with this much conviction. No gimmicks, no unnecessary theatrics just pure speed, aggression, and classic German thrash fury.

Gnome

Belgian stoner metal trio Gnome brought one of the most entertaining and unexpectedly charming performances of the entire festival weekend. While their music leans heavily into thick stoner riffs, doom grooves, and psychedelic rock influences, the band has become equally well known for embracing a playful fantasy-inspired image built around pointy hats, humor, and a deliberately over-the-top sense of adventure. What could easily turn into a gimmick, however, works remarkably well live because beneath all the theatrics sits an exceptionally tight and genuinely heavy band. Their 2024 album Vestiges of Verumex Visidrome further showcased that balance between massive grooves and lighthearted creativity.

From the moment Gnome stepped onto the stage, the atmosphere shifted noticeably. Smiles spread across the crowd almost immediately as the band fully committed to their absurd yet strangely captivating aesthetic. At the same time, the riffs hit with enough weight to ensure the performance never became a comedy act first and a metal show second. The combination of fuzzy guitar tones, infectious grooves, and energetic stage presence quickly pulled more and more people toward the stage.

One of the strongest aspects of the set was how naturally the band interacted with the audience. Rather than hiding behind irony, Gnome embraced the fun of their concept wholeheartedly while still performing with obvious passion and musicianship. The crowd responded enthusiastically, turning the performance into one of the weekend’s most upbeat and enjoyable moments.

In a festival dominated by darkness, aggression, and extreme metal intensity, Gnome offered something refreshingly different without sacrificing heaviness. Their performance proved that metal can still be weird, theatrical, and fun while remaining genuinely musically impressive at the same time.

Paleface Swiss

Swiss deathcore powerhouse Paleface Swiss delivered one of the most violently intense performances of the entire festival weekend, turning the area in front of the stage into complete chaos within minutes. Over the past few years, the band has rapidly become one of the biggest names in modern deathcore by combining crushing downtempo heaviness with hardcore aggression, emotionally raw lyrics, and an almost suffocating live atmosphere. Their 2025 album Cursed continued pushing that formula further, offering an even darker and more punishing sound that translated perfectly to the live environment at Into The Grave.

From the very beginning, Paleface Swiss approached the stage with overwhelming intensity. Massive breakdowns, relentless vocals, and bone-crushing low-end dominated the entire set, while the crowd responded with nonstop movement, violent pits, and constant crowdsurfing. The atmosphere felt less like a traditional festival performance and more like controlled destruction unfolding in real time.

Frontman Marc Zellweger proved to be a particularly commanding presence throughout the show. His aggressive delivery and constant interaction with the audience helped maintain the set’s explosive energy levels from start to finish. Despite the sheer brutality of the performance, the band remained impressively tight musically, ensuring the heaviness never dissolved into pure noise.

What made the set stand out even more was the emotional edge running underneath all the aggression. Paleface Swiss clearly aims for more than simple breakdown-heavy brutality, and that emotional intensity gave the performance extra weight beyond its obvious physical impact.

For fans of modern extreme music, this was exactly the kind of set they came to Into The Grave hoping to witness: loud, chaotic, oppressive, and completely uncompromising.

Blackbriar

Dutch symphonic gothic metal band Blackbriar brought a darker and more ethereal atmosphere to Into The Grave, offering a performance that felt almost dreamlike amidst the festival’s heavier and more aggressive acts. Over the past few years, the band has steadily grown into one of the most recognizable names within the modern gothic and symphonic metal scene, thanks to their blend of haunting melodies, cinematic arrangements, and fairytale-inspired aesthetics. Their 2023 album A Dark Euphony further expanded that identity, combining gothic rock influences with symphonic textures and emotionally charged songwriting that translates particularly well to a live setting.

From the moment the band stepped onto the stage, Blackbriar immediately created a unique atmosphere. Rather than relying on sheer heaviness or aggression, the performance focused on mood, elegance, and storytelling. Atmospheric keyboards, layered instrumentation, and dark melodic passages slowly pulled the audience into the band’s world, creating a strong contrast with many of the more brutal acts elsewhere on the lineup.

Much of the attention naturally centered around vocalist Zora Cock, whose distinctive voice and commanding stage presence gave the performance its emotional core. Her ability to shift between fragile melodies and more dramatic vocal moments added depth to the set and helped maintain the audience’s attention throughout.

Visually, the performance also stood out through its gothic presentation and carefully crafted aesthetic without becoming overly theatrical. Blackbriar managed to strike a balance between accessibility and dark atmosphere that worked exceptionally well in a festival environment.

While their music occupies a more melodic and atmospheric corner of the metal spectrum, Blackbriar proved more than capable of captivating a large festival audience. Their Into The Grave appearance delivered a beautifully dark and immersive performance that offered a welcome change of pace without losing any emotional intensity.

The Gathering

Few Dutch bands carry the same level of influence and quiet respect within atmospheric metal as The Gathering. Originally emerging from the doom and death metal scene in the early 1990s, the band gradually evolved into something far more experimental and emotionally layered, blending elements of gothic rock, progressive music, atmospheric metal, and alternative rock into a sound that became deeply influential far beyond the Netherlands. Their appearance at Into The Grave felt particularly special, not only because of the band’s legacy, but also because their music offered a very different emotional experience compared to many of the festival’s heavier and more aggressive acts.

Rather than overwhelming the audience through sheer force, The Gathering focused entirely on atmosphere, dynamics, and emotional connection. Their performance unfolded with patience and confidence, allowing melodies and textures to slowly build throughout the set. The result was a performance that felt immersive and almost meditative at times, creating a striking contrast with the nonstop intensity elsewhere on the lineup.

What stood out most was how timeless the material still sounded live. The band’s ability to blend melancholic beauty with subtle heaviness gave the performance a depth that resonated strongly with the audience. Even during quieter passages, the crowd remained remarkably attentive, clearly appreciating the emotional weight and musical sophistication behind the set.

Visually and musically, The Gathering avoided unnecessary theatrics, instead relying on the strength of the songs themselves to carry the performance. That understated approach worked exceptionally well and highlighted exactly why the band continues to hold such an important place within the broader atmospheric metal scene.

At Into The Grave, The Gathering proved that intensity does not always need to come from aggression alone. Sometimes atmosphere and emotion leave the strongest impact of all.

<figure class="wp-block-image
