\u00a0 A birthday party in town. What?!?!?! A review of a birthday party?!?!?! Yes,
\n\u00a0 Detonation celebrated their tenth anniversary in their hometown Utrecht, supported
\n\u00a0 by Jesus Martyr and RUA.<\/p>\n\n\n
\n

RUA took the opportunity to play their first gig ever, as support act of Jesus\u00a0Martyr and Detonation. And they did that not wholly without merit. Not wholly\u00a0surprisingly they gave away quite a professional performance, because I am sure\u00a0I have seen all of the members in other bands. Unfortunately this band does\u00a0not have a website. Perhaps a bit more passion while playing could improve the\u00a0overall performance, but besides that, their mixture of Tool and QOTSA was very\u00a0pleasing. Keep it going guys!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

\nJesus Martyr. What’s in a name. At least it is an eye-catcher and that would\u00a0also be a perfect description of the appearance of this Argentinian band. Muscled\u00a0drummer and singer\/bass player and a guitarist with enormous dreads. That looks\u00a0promising once again. I remember this band from their last tour through Europe\u00a0a couple of years ago and they again played a brilliant set. Death metal with a touch of thrash and some South American folk influences a la Soulfly. Great\u00a0music, great performance, good support act.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

\n\u00a0 <\/center><\/p>\n\n\n
\nAs mentioned above Detonation was to celebrate their tenth anniversary. A ridiculously\u00a0long existence in such a stable line-up. And Detonation seemed to think just\u00a0that and to underline that they dressed themselves up in outrageous costumes,\u00a0as you can see on the pictures. After the ‘O Fortuna’ intro singer Koen announced\u00a0that they will play a chronological set with lots of guest performances. Starting\u00a0out with their first ever, “true black metal” song from 1997 called\u00a0Through the Eyes of God. And as promised the set contained a lot of guest performances\u00a0as you can see on the setlist below. Jorre Jansen (Kutschurft and Engorge),\u00a0George Oosthoek (Pleurisy, Kutschurft and ex-Orphanage) (the former two in full\u00a0Kutschurft uniform), Kevin Storm (Soulstitia and Cardamon) to name but a few.It was a good night of melodic death metal with many friends of the band and\u00a0loads of familiar people. Perhaps a bit spoilt by the many performances in the\u00a0neighbourhood or was it that many people actually came for the party instead\u00a0of for their music. Maybe it was the home match problem. The crowd was just\u00a0not as wild as I have seen them before with Detonation. Nonetheless it was a\u00a0great performance with lots of songs you will probably not hear live before\u00a0their fifteenth birthday party (which they will hopefully be able to throw).
\nThe almost completely filled venue seemed happy and cheerful as the show came\u00a0to an end. And of course Detonation had to do an encore, which was greeted with\u00a0great enthusiasm. After that Jorre announced a sort of present for the band\u00a0and that we’d have to wait for it. So everybody went to the bar to get a beer\u00a0to pass the time. Some friends of the band (amongst whom, I think, at least\u00a0were Kevin, Jorre and George) made a powerpoint presentation containing a rewritten\u00a0version of one of Detonation’s songs, with alternate, hilarious lyrics. I could\u00a0go on mentioning all the funny, hilarious, unique and brilliant events of the\u00a0night, but that would make this review far too lengthy. I will let the pictures\u00a0do the talking for me.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n
