Originally a trio comprising vocalist and guitarist Andrew Stockdale, bassist and keyboardist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett, the band released their debut self-titled album in October 2005, which reached number three on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart. In August 2008, co-founding members Ross and Heskett left the band due to “irreconcilable personal and musical differences,” after which Stockdale vowed to continue using the Wolfmother moniker with new members in the future. After a brief hiatus, Stockdale returned with a new four-piece band in January 2009 featuring bassist and keyboardist Ian Peres, rhythm guitarist Aidan Nemeth and drummer Dave Atkins. The new lineup’s first album, Cosmic Egg is released on 23 October 2009.

The music mixes different styles together, is easy going and catchy. You will definitely nod along at the very least. The lyrics are easy to understand. The voice is not too low and not too high, it is in between and fitting very well to the songs. Somehow the music reminds me of British rock. Some songs are more towards groovy tunes like you can hear on “Pilgrim”, some are thoughtful and very melodic, others are containing some hard riffs like on “10,000 feet” whereas others are slow and soft, almost pop. The song “Cosmic Egg” itself somehow reminds me of Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne. The booklet contains many different pictures of the cosmic egg as well as the lyrics. “Cosmic Egg” is an album that strikes various styles fitting together like a big puzzle. But not only stylewise, also emotionwise the album is taking you on a big journey through them all. Listening to “Cosmic Egg” feels like listening to an entire world or even cosmos packed onto one CD. Definitely an interesting album and great to listen to over and over again.

Tracklist:
California Queen
New Moon Rising
White Feather
Sundial
In the Morning
10,000 Feet
Cosmic Egg
Far Away
Pilgrim
In the Castle
Phoenix
Violence of the Sun

Links:
Wolfmother MySpace
Wolfmother Official

Releasedate: 23-10-2009; Label: Island/Universal By: Nina Mende Wolfmother is an Australian hard rock band that formed in Erskineville, Sydney in 2000.
