11-10-2012 Ken Stringfellow

Support: Bon Jouni; Venue: Bar Loose, Helsinki (Finland)
By: Sabine van Gameren

During the weekdays you would not always expect a venue to be very crowded but with the line up for tonight many have found their way to bar Loose.

As a support the local Bon Jouni was invited. With various instruments the band plays around to create a magic atmosphere. Some strings to romantize it. A quite present base brings in a stronger body to the tracks and with some keys the melodic side of Bon Jouni comes out. As most remarkable track they play the song “Please Don’t Fuck Me Up” which is not as rock and roll as it may sound while hearing the title of it.

Ken Stringfellow does not really need something like a set list. Just his instruments and an audience around is enough for him to play a show. While taking requests from the people around him, the front man of The Posies and various other projects seem to feel comfortable here. His only complaint seem to be that the stage is not giving much options to get his fans close to him. Eventually he solves that by inviting people to sit with him onstage during his set or just jump in between them, singing without any microphone. This creates a very intimate atmosphere where everyone quietly listens with joy except from a single one that had a (few) beer(s) too many.

Whether he takes up the guitar or he sits down and support himself with keys, what comes out forward most is that Ken knows exactly which elements embrace his voice and with some stories and jokes in between he shows a charismatic character with himself. While his new album “Danzig In The Moonlight” just released he brings some new material to the stage, but some from further back of his musical career are not forgotten either. How could it be, after about 2,5 hours into the show the end is still not announced. Some of the people have left, probably an early working day coming up next, but the majority of the audience is still around when Ken Stringfellow decides it is enough. Must be said, you surely get worth of your money, a long and intimate show that highlights the qualities and experience of this musician.
