The heavy-experienced Swedes The Quill devour the horizon with their Master Of The Skies. Formed in the early 1990s, the band made out eleven records for three decades, and there is time for twelfth.
Packed with ten tracks in random timing, Master Of The Skies declares meta-genre including mix of metal prefixes like heavy-, melodic- and power- with slight of groove.
Honestly, amid this disproportion, the frame of album-titled tracks as opening and closing is the thing. The dynamic starter “Master of the skies” blends speedy metal chords with bit of stoner tonality, on contrary reprising and finalizing version is mild and melodic. Altogether, the material in the shell is less suitable and more challenging. However, I can mention couple of pathetic but aesthetic tunes that seemed to be quite interesting. Firstly almost hysterical “It’s over” based on tempo variations, secondly stoner “If tomorrow never comes” played in major. The paranoid lyrics and teasing sound refer to Black Sabbath legacy. Shifting to the bright side brought acoustic and alighting under 2-minutes “Son of Light” and canonical stoner “Light Turns Low”.
Described themselves as trend-makers, The Quill made almost pointless stuff. I recommend this album to anyone hesitant to step out of the shadows.
