Since foundation in 2007, the UK-based Desert Storm steadily built its discography. The seventh album, Buried Under the Weight of Reason, continues the long-time journey.
Desert Storm offers nine tracks, randomly timed and partly experimental. I can’t say it’s wholesome, but every track definitely feels like a complete piece on its own.
Buried Under The Weight Of Reason starts with melodic connotations in “Newfound Respect” but changes style of crooning in the middle. “Shamanic echoes”, over seven minutes canonical stoner track, with looped melody in shamanic trance arranged by cascading and groovy riffs as genre’s mark in general. The similar vibes with less timing found in “Woodsman” and “Cut Your Teeth”. “Carry The Weight”, technically instrumental pause for listening, minds of meditative rain dropping. On the contrary, “Dripback” sounds like post-punk illusion with barking vocal part. The last pointed track, my absolute favorite “Law Unto Myself”, despite more aggressive intentions, the vocals and music complement each other perfectly.
Overall, Buried Under The Weight Of Reason is a bold album that showcases Desert Storm’s maturity. Not every track works for me, but the unbridled energy and driving riffs make it a rewarding listen. Especially for fans of stoner and experimental rock.
