25-02-2011 The Black Angels

Supports: The Rockandys; Venue: Tivoli de Helling, Utrecht (Netherlands)
By: Sabine van Gameren

An evening in tivoli which makes the time go back to the 60’s. The Rockandys and The Black Angels are up for this evening.

For those who had bothered to come early, it might not have been the best way to start the evening out. The band The Rockandys are by far the most unmotivated band I saw playing in front of a sold out venue ever. In between the songs they hardly gave a word to the audience, besides the few basics they studied by heart. The faces of the musicians look like they are playing on a funeral and the whole atmosphere seems kind of down. There is no energy in their set and they give the impression of not wanting to play at all. Hell of earth, in their red light dominance, a venue filled with that much smoke that people walk out coughing and walk outside to gasp for some air. Altogether a show we don’t want to waste much words on, a sad waste of our time caused by various factors. Only a few people in the audience gave them a polite applause, but no one bothered to ask for an encore.

The Black Angels are also a bit distant, but seem way more up for making their gig into a party than their support. The band has been founded in 2004 and have their base in USA. Their psychedelic influences combined with the colors of the light may sometimes hint a little into a reggae influence but the mainly make the show with their intensive rock music. A shy guitarist who occasionally takes over some of the drums makes the show element visible as well. It shows some intensity and that was really needed. Vocals, by Alex Maas, seemed quite distance in the mix at first, which made it a bit of a noisy confusion, but soon it changed and there was more presence of him too. He seems to keep himself busy also with keys, bass and all small instruments. At the end of the evening the band have given a good show, maybe not the most energetic that you could imagine but the intensity of this band comes mainly from the music. This time the audience showed some more appreciation and luckily the evening ended with a positive atmosphere.
