Black Diamond – Mourning for me

Releasedate: 21-05-2008; Label: Club Inferno;
By: Sabine van Gameren

Black Diamond is a female fronted metal band which started in December 2004.
This progressive metal band released their first demo “Imprisoned Dreams” in 2006.
“Mourning For Me” is their latest release.

This promo CD contains 8 songs. It starts of with a 49 seconds intro followed by the song “Fallen Angel” which did not really convince me of any originality. The keys, which mostly fall back into the background, sound a little childish somehow.
The next songs definitely show more balls. It seems like those are more balanced. It’s doesn’t sound like the vocals overscream the rest of the band anymore.
“Ascension” is a song which would do perfectly on an Ayreon album as well, though on this album it stands apart. It’s so different from the other songs that I wonder why it is on this album.
Definitely the most potential song on this album is “Funeral of a Suicide”. It comes from the heart and you can hear that the vocalist is putting her soul into it.
The album closes with “Lake of Melancholy” which does not do too much for me.

Overall, it sounds like this band is still looking for their own sound. They experimented with different things on “Mourning For Me”. They showed diversity, but I hope they eventually choose a more stable line for their music, so an upcoming release will sound more like one piece.
