Before starting this Reveal! review, let me get this straight. If you are fan of genres and if you like your music categorized, this album will fuck you up and make you think “What the hell did I just listen to?” So before you dive in to this record and this band, handle it with caution. On the other hand, if you are a huge mess and love chaos, come closer.
Reveal! is a four-piece band from Sweden and they make chaotic, fucked up music. It’s hard to describe a certain style or categorize the music so I will spare this and leave it up to the listener to decide. “Scissorgod” is their 3rd full-length and once again proves how the band says “fuck it” to genres and just do what they want to do. The music is twisted, dark and it will feel like the thoughts inside your head are being squeezed, which might be… well, disturbing or enlightening depending on which side you are!
As a huge fan of the previous release “Flystrips”, I can say that “Scissorgod” feels more experimental and at times even a bit more ‘calm’, in the sense that there is, of course, calm before the storm. This one also is more diverse when it comes to the sound and so getting used to and digesting this record might take a while. However, the essential that is that mind-itching darkness is present throughout the release, which also is the biggest highlight. There are quite some nice transitions, interesting elements and many twists and turns! I am also sure that depending on the listeners’ mental state and emotions, there will some favorites or the ones that stand a bit more; as for me, songs like “Feeble Hearts”, “Scissorgod” and “The Plot Thickens” did the trick. The record also just fucking flows; it is smooth, the composition is flawless and raw and this is what these guys do best.
“Scissorgod” is not for everyone but it is definitely one of my favorites of this year and I can gladly say that the anticipation was worth it. Not one second is boring with this release but also with Reveal! in general. So get this one and get prepared for your world to be turned upside down.
