M.I.God is a German formation using a variety of styles to come to their sound. They recently released “Specters On Parade”, it is available now.
Their previous album dates back to 2012 so the band took their time to evolve and what they serve us now is a mix of Prog, Death and melodic sounds. The catchiness is leading you in most songs, but don’t be mistaken, the way they compose their songs is often a bit playful. Taking time to grow into a highlight while they can also have a vehement start. That playfulness is keeping it interesting, but demands you to stay with it. And also, it is kind of hard to speak of songs, as there are 21 tracks on this release. Many of them are short inbetweeners, but also an 8+ minute track is there to be found.
Sometimes you feel there was a conceptalbum idea when started, but that in the end that faded a bit. It is still quite connected with eachother but it is not that obvious story coming forward. The band has their strenght in the longer songs where they can slowly play with tensions and drag their audience into the music. The short tracks are fun as some filler, but not always needed.
Altogether the Germans have released a fine album. It has a face of their own, they present clearly what they want to be, not taking too much from another. Recommended for Prog fans specifically but there is more to this album than that.
