10-04-2010 Kinkats Party

Venue: Backstage, Munich (Germany)
By: Andreas Klimmt

Tonight the Kinkats-Magazine made quite a big party at the Munich Backstage. There was lot of great stuff to see, not only numerous ladies dressed to catch everyones eye but also some great musical performances. The party, including some special events like photoshootings and a raffle was framed into the liveshows of 4 wellknown rockabilly to celtic-punk bands who rounded up that evening perfectly.

The opening band were none less than the well known Munich rockers of Sixes And Sevens. Since over 10 years they’re performing their “Backyard Rock’n’Roll” internationally now, so who else could start a party like that at home. Unlike last year, the show was set up at the Backstage-Werk, so sadly it was not fully sold out, but the boys gave their very very best and therefore forced the audience to move and heat up with that energy and drive. I hadn’t seen them for quite a while but I was back into the groove instantly, it was as much fun to see them as in the old tymes.
Next were The Other, one of the biggest german horrorpunk bands, somewhere between The Misfits and Danzig. They did a solid show and seemed to really hit some nerves at the audience. Onstage they had extensive decorations but also great lighting and sound. Generally on all 4 bands I had the impression, that it was about the best lighting that i ever saw at the Backstage. Of course, they performed all the songs the audience expected at such a big party, from the classic Beware Of Ghouls and In The Dead Of The Night to Hier Kommt Die Dunkelheit. This song is also on their new longplayer “New Blood”, that will be out on May 21st 2010. Just a few songs after feeding bloody eyes out of a jar to the greedy audience, they went and opened the stage for Mr Psychobilly himself.

So Mad God Cole entered that stage and blew all that Psychobilly energy out to the audience like he did about 25 years ago. Mark Cole was the voice of the Krewmen, a classy Rockabilly band who he turned into Psychobilly in the mid of the 80ties, songs of that time are Bus Stop, Warpath, Bar Room Fantasy, Let Loose or The Hell Train. In the mid of this decade (over 20 years not beeing on stage) he put together a new band and recorded/released “Ultra Violence” in 2007. With the advent of meeting Jim Jeffries(guit), Paul “Choppy” Lambourne (bass) and Lee “The Sperm” Barnett (drums) the MadDog sound was formed. It’s kind of like the old days, but just stronger, harder and got more balls than back in the original band. His voice is exactly the same, only much more powerful now. The audience did not seem to have forgotten about him over all those years and had much fun as well with the new material, it was really great to watch that 4 boys rockin the hell out of their instruments.

Finally the men with kilts set up on stage, The Real Mc Kenzies. The men around Paul Mc Kenzie are Canadians in origin but Scotts in their heart. So the Real sound goes from jacked-up, traditional Scottish ballads, original hard-edge electric-folk songs to Scottish-Canadian political commentary. In their very best party mood they toured all around the world, back and forth again since 1992. Now the band who released their last longplayer “Off The Leash” in 2008 is back with a new tour that will bring them all the way criss and cross Europe in 60 days: D, CH, B, F, ES, I, CH, A, NL, CZ and POL in almost 20.000 km. First the audience seemed to need a few songs to get in RMK-mood but then there was over 1 and a half hour pure party with that 6piece-band on stage. Singing and dinking playing guitarsolos, bagpipes and the whistle and then even more drinking and anthemic melodies. The Real Bastards, how they call themselves played almost every hit they have performed in their 30 year carreer, and this with so much power and empathy like no other. It was nice to see that even most of the younger audience knew the lyrics and lines of not only the newer songs like “Chip” or “Drink Some More” or classy songs like “Scots Wh’a Ha’e” and “Bastards” but also traditional styled ones like “Mainland, Wild Mountain Thyme” or “MacPhersons Rant”. In the end I can quote from Bastards “… And when I go, I wanna go to whisky heaven…” thanks for the great night Paul and your boys, hope to see you soon again.
