NYOS – Now.

Label: Self-released
Releasedate: 22-02-2019

NYOS are a noisy, loop-driven instrumental duo based in Finland. The band was formed in 2014 when UK-born guitarist Tom Brooke and drummer, Tuomas Kainulainen met after Tom moved to Finland. The band has released four albums so far, with the latest one “Now.”, out on February 2019. Our first encounter with this duo was during their gig as as a support act for Zeal & Ardor last year in Hamburg. Their avantgarde and dynamic sound was bizarre and captivating, and so we were more than curious about how the new release was like.

“Now.” offers us eight pieces, all different from each other, yet connected by thin strings, thereby forming a huge mosaic. Considering the band delivers a bizarre style mostly consisting of a bit of avantgarde and 100% instrumental ‘noisy’ elements, each song will evoke different emotions and some songs may stand out more than others depending on the listener’s experiences and character. That being said, this bizarre style may not be for everyone and I assure you that it will take a while for this album to sink in. Contrary to the ‘normal’ style in songs that we are used to, the instrumental style, consisting of a nice harmony of the dynamic drums and the noisy elements in the guitars and melodies, is the main essence and highlight of the record. This allows the listener to shape the sound of the album as he/she wants to without any boundaries…so imagination is the key in this record.

“Now.” is not your typical, every-day album so I recommend it to the ones that wanna experiment with their music and push their boundaries a bit. I enjoyed listening to it and the little twists and turns that it offers, which get even more interesting with each listen. Get it and let your imagination speak.
