Saor – Forgotten Paths

Label: Avantgarde Music
Releasedate: 15-02-2019

Saor is a Scottish formation, founded by Andy Marshall. Formed in 2013, this band became a huge success in a short amount of time. The band has four releases so far, with the latest one “Forgotten Paths”. One surprise contribution on this release has been Alcest‘s Neige on the title track among many other talented musicians.

“Forgotten Paths” delivers a great combo of the atmosphere and black metal blended with folk and post-rock elements. Surely, the aspect of atmospheric black metal / celtic folk has been the main essence in Saor‘s sound but this release takes this to a whole new dimension as the listener is greeted with a rather more dynamic yet an atmospheric release. That being said, Saor‘s inspirations and the concept of incorporating traditional Scottish sounds has been my highlight in this album and in Saor generally. Even though there is a general melancholic and dark vibe to the release, the songs do not come off as depressing or ‘dark’ (as compared to the typical black metal sound we know). So be prepared to give it a try to the melodic side of this atmospheric black metal style.

Another personal highlight for me has been the nice balance between the instrumental parts in the songs and the harsh / clean vocals. This is so well-done that the listener will not get tired or bored with the overall flow; each song offers different emotions, different vibes and will take you to different places.

“Forgotten Paths” offers just the perfect dose of atmospheric BM / celtic folk. Recommended for the ones who like their black metal melodic and celtic. One of our favorites of 2019 for sure!
