Me Against the World – Breaking Apart

[schema type=”review” name=”Me Against the World – Breaking Apart” author=”Miguel Melo” pubdate=”2018-10-12″ ]

On the 12th of October, Breaking Apart was released. These gentleman come from Germany with a mellow sound, with some spikes of power.

There are a couple of things that are really important. How it begins and how it ends, what are the paths followed by the musicians and are the tracks connected to each other. Do the albums get a structure? Is that noticeable when you hear it? The lyrics? Questions to be answered. As a first album, this sounds pretty cool. The main theme is clearly to be in conflict. Internal, the world, the reality, name it. Teenager me would have loved this. Adult me likes it as well.

The rhythm is here and the composition quality is a given, but the drum production could have been better. I am a sucker for power and these guys have it definitely, but you cannot get it out properly without a better drum sound. Can’t really point my finger on what is missing there. The guitars are there, the voice does it’s work right in place with some very interesting solos. Defrauded is an interesting song, Dying World is an interesting mixture of sounds and styles. It is very cool to go from choir voices with Spanish like guitar rhythm. If I would have to pick the inspiration for this I would say that Queen’s Innuendo meets Metallica Nothing else matters. I can see definitely throughout the album that there is a strong 80’s Thrash metal influence. The musical construction is properly done. Against the world is a hell of a song, complete, full in elements, and not being over pretentious and progressive, does it’s job perfectly. Sets me and the other listeners on a head bang free ride. Morgans Misery is pirate metal. There you go. Me Against the World brings together early thrash instrumental quality, good composition, interesting lyrics, and a Pirate attitude. Sounds pretty positive for a first album.

But wait, there’s more! I kept going listening to this album during this week trying to figure out what was more. There were morning and the first song that pops up was Breaking apart, and the radio edit, with guest female singer voice borrowed from Mady. What was it? It wasn’t just the fact that it was good women’s voice singing. There had to be something else. And then hit me! It sounded like Lonely day of System of a Down! They got it! The instrumental complexity inspired by 80’s Thrash, Pirate metal, and the stickiness of 2000’s Nu Metal. These guys have future and I hope they become one of my favorite bands soon. It was a nice job.
