Nebelhorn is a project that came to life by the mainman Wieland in 2002. Formed in Germany, the project released four full-lengths so far with the latest one, “Urgewalt” being released a while ago.
I gotta admit that the viking metal scene is not what it used to be; most of the albums and ideas lack originality and it’s always something we have heard before. So even though I am still a viking metal fan, I always listen to viking metal albums with full suspicion and a bit of criticism. This was the case with “Urgewalt” as well… From the intro (resembling a bit of LOTR Soundstrack and Summoning), I raised my eyebrows but the rest of the album surprised me!
From the beginning to the end, Nebelhorn offers us a great mix of clean and harsh vocals with the emphasis on the BM atmosphere; bombastic drumming, BM vocals and atmospheric keys from time to time form the nice essence of the album’s sound. Surely, some of the melodies and the styles are elements we have all heard before here and there. But, the album is consistent and offers nice elements from viking & mostly BM metal. That being said, I was surprised at how little folk instruments have been used so I think this album might spark the interest of the ones that like their viking metal more brutal and less folk-ish. Definitely worth giving it a try!
