The Atlas Moth is a Chicago based formation making Atmospheric Stoner/Sludge. The band is releasing full length album number four called: “Coma Noir”.
After their first release “A Glorified Piece of Blue-Sky” from 2009 I lost a bit track of this band, but our paths cross again as they release this album called “Coma Noir” And it is good that we meet again. The guys certainly took things further than our previous rendez-vous and all for the win.
Their music could be a bit confusing for a first timer, a whole bunch of genres blend in and the outcome is not so stereotypical as you may suspect. The heaviness and darkness are battling eachother for what makes the biggest impression, together they leverage each other. The guys smartly compose their songs, tensions building and you feel yourself dazing away into a big black hole. Songs like “Actual Human Blood” are taking attention with each element of its own, blended into the whole sound so well that standing on its own it shines and yet never loses touch with the rest. Pure class. Another highlight you could find in “Furious Gold” which is full of power.
So now I find myself wondering why I never got a hold onto these records in between this one and its first release. This one shows me very well why the name always stuck in mind and the record still gets its occasional spin. It’s a complete release, one that gives you all that you are looking for in an album. Lucky me.
