Diavolos – You Lived, Now Die

Diavolos is a death metal band based in Greece. The band has been formed this year by the vocalist Tas Danazoglou (Satan’s Wrath, ex- Electric Wizard) and bassist Taneli Jarva (ex- Impaled Nazarene, ex-Sentenced). Their first full-length album “You Lived, Now Die” is out this month!

Considering that the band members all come from strong bands and that they are quite tight musically, it’s no wonder why this record sounds so brutal and impressive right from the beginning! This is not only an old-school death metal record but I felt a lot of black, speed and thrash metal influences. In this sense, this album is not one of those monotonous death/thrash metal albums; it will punch you in the face, make your head spin and sweep you off of your feet! One aspect I really liked is the direct approach; the songs are not too long and they are just in the right dose, making the listener craving for more!

Soundwise, I loved every aspect of the elements in the band’s sound. The vocals are as aggressive as it can get, the riffs are quite diverse, making the record even more versatile and darker than it already is. Add the powerful and dynamic drumming and the band’s sound does not need anything else! Another aspect I really loved was those little contrasts the band used in some songs; for example in the beginning of “Baptized in Vomit”, we hear Byzantine chant but then the chant ends and we hear someone vomiting… or take “Totencorpse” for example. The beginning reminded me of those typical annoying German songs which makes you think “Oh well… What comes next?”, and then bam! We get punched in the face by those blasts and the aggression. Those contrasts made me respect the band even more; I gotta say that it made the record much more interesting, darker and evil. I also have to say that the the band made a great job blending the old-school sound with a nice and clean production which makes the sound raw and fresh at the same time!

There’s no denying that there are influences from some big bands but “You Lived, Now Die” is definitely recommended to the fans of old-school death metal. My favorites are “You Lived, Now Die” and “Baptized in Vomit”. Give in to the darker side!
