Apocalyptica is a Finnish metal band from Helsinki, formed in 1993. The band is composed of classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso (all three of whom are graduates of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki) and drummer Mikko Sirén. Originally a Metallica tribute band, their music borrows elements from a wide variety of genres. This is their eight full length studio album and it is called “Shadowmaker”. A very special one and a big change for Apocalyptica. For the first time they have committed for one singer who is not only taking over the vocal parts for the songs on the brand new album, but he will also be part of the upcoming touring dates. And Apocalyptica decided on nobody less than the former Scars on Broadway guitar player Franky Perez. This will be very exciting.

“Shadowmaker” comes with twelve songs. Most of them include vocals. Apocalyptica play with emotions and atmospheres on this album. Creating a different one with each song. From heartwarming love to creepy darkness. “Shadowmaker” has them all. Beautiful arrangements along with great lyrics fascinate you from the very first second to the very last. Catching your attention and not letting go until the last note has ceased in the air. The cello arrangements of Apocalyptica have always been absolutely impressive. Yet somehow this album is different, more special than any of the previous one. Not sure if this is just because of the set vocalist Franky that sticks around for the album or if it is the variety of emotions Apocalyptica packed into not only the album, but also into each song. So it happens that one song is telling a story that not only carries one mood but a variety of them. Fascinating, from first to last. And the vocals are strong, interesting and drawing your attention. An album that takes you over. “Shadowmaker” is a brilliant masterpiece of music that everyone must check out.
