Parzival – Casta

Releasedate: 15-09-2014; Label: Euphonious Records / Voices Music & Entertainment
By: Sabine van Gameren

Parzival is a band from Copenhagen, Denmark. They describe themselves as a neo-classical / dark bombastic / martial act. In 2013 they came with a “Die Kulturnacht” and anno 2014 the band returns with album number eight called “Casta” which is out now.

This band never held back with putting different influences in their music. In the previous release they had all German lyrics so it is interesting to see what they came with this time. This time we get a diversity of languages, Russian, German, Latin and Sanskrit. The whole has a typical classical style over them, the use of instruments makes the whole very dynamic and the dark vocals of Dimitrij are giving it a deep and impressive touch.
The album is not really an accessible one. Maybe it wasn’t in line of expectations anyway, but it really is an album you have to sit down for and give it some time. The whole tells you a story and you may not always follow it that easily if you don’t know the languages. The music does not tell the story for you. It is there to back up the vocals and give it some extra weight, but when it does not come with a lot of ups and downs it may not keep people listening longer. A shame as the use of Indian Sikh Folk musicians brings an interesting touch on it if you give yourself the chance to hear it.

“Casta” is a remarkable piece and will finds its way to an audience that have a deep interest in all sorts of music, perhaps schooled musicians. For the majority of people it may be a bit too tough cookie to crack.
