“Black metal for people who don’t like black metal”

Vvilderness is a one-man post-black metal project. Hailing from Hungary, the project was formed in 2014 under a different name and released two full-length records. After changing the name to Vvilderness, the project released the record “Devour The Sun” last year and the LP version (limited to 100 copies) will be released soon.

“Devour The Sun” deals with concepts like mankind’s fall in a myth-like approach so the main sound is atmospheric and deep. There is a certain melancholy and the depth that become more meaningful each time you listen to the record, making it much more interesting after a few spins. That being said, this atmospheric post-BM sound is the essence of the record from the beginning to the end. At times, this is felt via the instrumental passages and at times via the vocals or the melodies. One thing that also surprised me is how the record gets better towards the end; I normally would expect just the opposite but surprisingly the album sparked my interest even more at the end with the atmosphere getting darker and capturing my attention even more.

While listening to each song one by one, those of you familiar with this scene will definitely recognize certain influences such as Alcest or Les Discrets. So the mix of certain genres (post-metal, black-gaze, atmospheric BM) and the styles of bands in this genre are definitely a huge influence on this album. I actually like the fact that this is clear in the album but for future releases, I would really like to see this project pushing the boundaries and experimenting more as the music is really open for experimenting. All in all, it’s important to stay unique in this genre.

“Devour The Sun” is definitely recommended for fans of post-BM/shoegaze as well as the atmospheric side of metal. Looking forward to what the project has for us.
