Moonspell – 1755

[schema type=”review” name=”Moonspell – 1755″ description=”Label: Napalm Records” author=”Sabine van Gameren” pubdate=”2017-11-03″ ]The Portuguese band Moonspell does not really need an introduction. The guys have been on top of their game for many years. Were they celebrating an anniversary earlier, the guys are now back with a brand new album called “1755”.

What does that number say to you, well maybe not much, but if you are from Portugal it does perhaps. The year that a terrible earthquake brought doom over Lissabon and destroyed the majority of the city. Moonspell wrote an album about it. In Portuguese. So to understand the true density of the words you may want to open Google translate now. Good, you will not be left completely oblivious in case Portuguese is not your language. The guys are, as always, good in setting the atmosphere musically also. A certain aggression in the sound they give us makes the whole easier to feel. To feel the pain that the destruction must have brought. It has perhaps a bit more progressive approach, the whole is taken into comprehension maybe a step further than the previous release of the guys but with their own charm they make it yet quite listenable for the listener. The addition of the choir brings in a bit of drama as well.

“1755” is an album that will be bringing many hours of joy for the listener, but it may not be love at first sight and that is mainly due to the language. Just go for the atmospherical part and you will ease into loving everything else fast enough.
