If you are into occult rock, Jess and the Ancient Ones is a name you should have heard by now. The Finnish acid death rock band has been active since 2010 and definitely one of the pearls of the occult rock scene nowadays. They have recently released their latest record “The Horse and the Ancient Ones” recently. Let’s dig deep and go on a trip.

A trip has never been so beautiful! A little bit of occult rock, a bit of 60s psych, a lot of rock’n’roll… From the beginning to the end, the whole album radiates so much energy in so many levels, emotions and colors (ha! Check out the album cover). On top of it all, Jess’ amazing and powerful vocals shows us how it should be; her voice combined with that authentic JATAO sound is what makes the record stand out. A highlight that gets me still interested is the band’s usage of different excerpts from various sources about the LSD trip, making the album a pure experience. I can seldom listen to records that flaw like water but this one is beyond that; it flows and it will nourish your soul.. and ears! On top of it all, the record is progressive, it will make you feel like you are travelling in different dimensions, between different melodies and I guess that is the aim of the record. At times, you will feel your heart beating fast or dancing and at other times, you will just want to lay down and watch the stars and the trees.

Sound-wise, having been a fan of the band’s previous records,  I see the band testing and pushing their boundaries with this one. I find the focus on the combination of keyboards and vocals inspirational as it completes the overall magic of the record pretty well. It feels like a smooth but intense journey that will reach out to your soul.

What are you waiting for? Experience the ultimate journey with “The Horse and Other Weird Tales”. Definitely my favorite of 2017 and definitely recommended for the fans of good quality occult rock!
