Skunk Anansie shows are rare these days. But, for two shows, the UK band came to Germany and we got to be at one of them. Skunk Ananasie is a rock band that was formed in the UK in 1994. A female fronted band with an impressive vocalist that goes by the name of Skin. Her voice has quite some power and depth, she nails even the highest notes perfectly and makes them fit into the music. Earlier this year, the band has released their brand new album “Anarchytechture”, which is the sixth studio album.

Tonight these guys hit Frankfurt. Solo. No support act. All eyes on Skunk Anansie. And all the pressure of the expectations the fans had. The Batschkapp was packed in this Friday night. Everyone was eager to see these guys perform tonight. The stage included a couple screens, a drum set on a platform and a lot of room for the band to move around.

The show was supposed to begin at 8pm. But the guys came on one hour later. During the waiting, the fans were joking at first, chatting the time away. But after about forty minutes wait time, the audience got a little anxious. Whistling loudly, shouting, asking the band to come out. Even booing came up.

At 9pm Skunk Anansie finally hit the stage.  The singer Skin was wearing a basecamp with huge spikes and a hooded jacket that reminded of a raincoat. She apologized for the wait, telling them ‘her boob did not want to go into the shirt’. The cheering was immense now and the wait time was forgotten. And the band began with a big bang. The music was loud and intense. So was the singer’s voice while she was constantly jumping around. Celebrating the night. And so the night went on.

Skunk Anansie played songs off all their albums and out of all their twenty years. A good mix of hits and favorites, old and new. Close to the beginning of the show Skin began announcing the wrong song until her two band members made her aware of it. She blushed, laughed about herself and eventually played the right song. When the song she announced came around, she simply said ‘well, I announced this one already, so here we go’ with a huge smile and on they went. The little mixups happened a few times. Not with songs, but with the city they played in and such, which made everyone laugh and love the band even more. Skin talked a lot to their fans, telling stories about the past twenty years, the past shows, how confused the can be and made jokes with fans who shouted stuff like ‘I love you’.

The performances of each song were intense. You could tell, everyone was giving everything to play the songs. Enjoying every second of it. And the singer left everyone impressed with her strong voice and how she sings even the highest note with ease, shouting low in the very next second. Everyone in the audience was clapping, dancing and singing along to every single song. Having a good time. The screens on stage showed either lights or some images that fit to the song. But it did not distract from the performance on stage, it supported the focus on stage instead. After “Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good)” Skunk Anansie left the stage. But the audience demanded more.

Skunk Anansie came back for an intense encore of two songs. Between these two songs, Skin went into the audience, letting everyone kneel down, walking in between them. Making jokes of and with the ones still standing. Then they played their last song of the night, which was also their oldest song.

Even though the waiting might have let you believe different, Skunk Anansie is an absolutely humble band that loves their music and enlighten people with it. Playing their music for the people. It was a fun night with lots of laughter, dancing, clapping and good music. Skin is an impressive singer and performer, just like the rest of Skunk Anansie. This show was an absolute blast. And even though it lasted for only about ninety minutes, everyone was soaked in sweat and happy. Skunk Anansie did not let anyone or anyone’s expectations down but instead they rocked this Friday night big time!
