For the past couple years it grew quiet around a band that is also known as Helsinki Vampires: The 69 Eyes. Founded in 1989, the band has done quite a lot in their career. Finding their sound and turning into the most popular gothic band in Finland and Europe. Now, the 69 Eyes have a brand new album ready. With that one they are currently on tour. Tonight the band hit Frankfurt, filling the Batschkapp.

The Ghost Wolves Opening up for the 69 Eyes were The Ghost Wolves. Austin, Texas based duo The Ghost Wolves met 5 years ago and have been an inseparable musical force ever since. To this pair of 20-something year old musicians, Rock & Roll is a spirit, not a genre – a way of looking at the world, experiencing life, and overcoming it’s challenges at full throttle – no holding back – amps turned up all the way. The two jumped on stage early, rocking through their set. The music, as well as the performance, was very special. With the edgy sound and slightly crazy performance, the band left the audience dazzled. Within twenty-five minutes, the two were down with their songs. Not everyone liked the show, but everyone kept watching.

The 69 Eyes As the opener left the stage, everyone was ready to see the Finns rock on stage. The 69 Eyes are a multi-platinum selling Finnish rock band. The latest album of the guys is called “Universal Monsters” and was released just that week. So brand new. The first two singles of that album are “Jet Fighter Plane” and “Dolce Vita”. Both very catchy songs.

The cheering was loud as the Finns entered the stage. Everyone was excited to see them again. The band was dressed in all black, Jyrki and Timo were wearing sun glasses. Jussi had a huge drum set built on the back of the stage, sitting higher and drumming his soul away. Bare chested. The 69 Eyes began with some old songs like “Betty Blue” and such before they played the brand new singles.

The 69 EyesEvery fan was singing along to each of the songs, dancing and having a good time. It was a very familiar atmosphere filling the venue, although the band barely talked to the audience in between the songs. But there was no need to use spoken words between the songs. The songs were enough. The music spoke for itself. And the fans appreciated this, not needing too much conversation in between.

Closer to the end, The 69 Eyes played their hits like “Feel Berlin”, Lost Boys” and “Wasting The Dawn” where even the last fan in the venue was caught in another world. Dancing the night away. The band even played their Blondie cover “Call Me”. The guys were moving around on stage, dancing and playing their music. Appreciating the audience and animating them to move along even more.

It was a great show. And it was great to see The 69 Eyes again. These guys definitely still know how to rock. Everyone enjoyed the show and had a great night.
