18-10-2007 Mama Trash Family Artist Event

Venue: Gloria, Helsinki (Finland)
 By: Sabine van Gameren

On the 18th of October 2007, band promoter Mama Trash organized an event with some of the artists signed up by her agency.
In front of Gloria, where this event took place, were already some people waiting in the early afternoon to see their heroes.

As first band of the evening we got Sexydeath. This Swedish electro/industrial act, by Alex Frejrud is one to keep your eyes on. Gloria is not completely filled yet, but the ones who were there seemed to enjoy it quite a lot. Alex talks   with the audience during the show and asks them to dance to the music. Some people do, some people don’t. At least I can say I enjoyed the gig. The music of Sexydeath sticks in mind easily and sounds to me like there is no other   way than dance on it. Especially the drummer gets credits from me. Seems like he enjoys playing as much as I enjoyed listening. Sexydeath released an album called “The Damiana Error” before. The website of Sexydeath tells us the new album will be available this summer. Unfortunately we can not get it yet, while the leaves turning brown and falling down of the trees where they have grown this year. I want to have it. Sexydeath convinced me from that by this show. I don’t know exactly when the new album will be released, but I can tell you that I keep my eyes on it! I am sure the album of Sexydeath will   soon be available for all of you.

Sonic roots is the next band which enters the stage. They are quite a picture on stage. Singer Henry Lee Roots wears a white fury coat with an animal on his shoulders. He also wears sunglasses which really completes the rock and roll image. During the gig he is playing with roses and entertains the audience with it. Sonic roots is a typical hard rock band, influenced by bands like Danzig, Black Label Society and Soundgarden. Started in 2005 rocking their way to world domination. Quite successful I would say, the band has already toured in various European countries. But tonight in their hometown Helsinki they give a brilliant show. Action is everywhere on stage and it is a pleasure to watch. Sonic roots keeps the rock and roll alive.

The Finnish Stereo Junks are next. A perfect following up from Sonic Roots I would say. Same idea, same sort of music and same sort of influences. The band is founded in 2003. What makes the glam element very recognizable is the logo of the band. The logo is a playboy bunny which is kind of thrashed to an evil rock bunny. You can clearly see the band has quite some stage experience already. Where singer Anzi Destruction takes attention, the rest of the band is more in the background, just playing their music. Overall a nice performance.

Time for another Swedish band called Gemini Five. At this moment, the band is searching for a new lead guitarist. Because of that, they asked Cat from Deathstars to fill in this position for a while. The band which started in 2001 already, made a good move by that. It seems like that Cat attracts a lot of people. In front of him, there were a lot of girls taking pictures. On the other side of the stage it was less filled. I wonder if the audience actually cares for the music of Gemini Five which immediately reminds me to the music of Mötley Crüe. Although the band did not had an own lead guitarist, it did feel like I was watching a complete band, which knows each other quite long already. It felt like I was watching to a team. Compliments to Gemini Five for this. They really surprised me in a positive way.

Last band of the evening is Maryslim, also from Sweden. Maryslim is rock and roll without all the bullshit. No need of extra glam to make it stand out, the music does enough. Funny thing to notice is, that all band members add their vocals to the music. When I say they started already in 1999 they are the longest lasting band from the evening. Unfortunately not all of the audience stayed to see Maryslim (they were probably looking for Cat), but still some people there for them. The audience sings and claps along when asked. The music brings some melodic choruses so it is not that hard to sing along anyway. In the start of 2007 they released their 4th album “A Perfect Mess”. Recently, they recorded a video for the song “This Corrosion”, a cover of Sisters of Mercy, which you can download at their website.
