It’s quite rare that I get a chance to review a split CD featuring different bands. This one features two bands; Dutch pagan metal band Heervader and Finnish pagan/black metal band Ancestors Blood. Both bands are formed around 2002 and deliver us the awesome pagan metal music!
The beginning of the CD is quite refreshing and has been on my “repeat” list for a while now. The first song – which is my favorite- is just a great pagan metal song and will satisfy the pagan/folk listeners for sure. The riffs are quite harsh but also melodic and I also sensed a tribute to the old pagan metal era. In the first part, we also get to hear lots of monologues – either in-between songs or in the beginning of the second song for example- in Dutch, which shows this traditional side of the band. I am sure this will be more interesting and catchy to the ones who can understand Dutch.
The ‘second’ part which features the Finnish pagan metallers Ancestors Blood, is more ‘atmospheric’ and even features ‘doom/gothic’ elements blended with ‘black metal’ vocals. The synths/melodies also reminded me of some big names – one of them being Moonsorrow for sure-. It also caught my attention that the songs are live recordings which made this part even more interesting! I can definitely say that this part is harsher and more brutal in a way. Especially if you like the black metal side of this genre, you will enjoy this part a lot more.
I think this CD offers the concept of pagan metal from different aspects. On one hand, we have the melodic and folk-ish side of pagan metal with Heervader. On the other hand, the fans of the black-ish and more atmospheric side of pagan metal will probably be drawn in to the songs by Ancestors Blood more. Whatever the case, I don’t think there’s any song that I don’t like in this CD. Give it a chance and get in touch with your spiritual side!
