Thursday evening, Ekko is filled. Two bands will be up this night and the audience mostly arrived in time for the support Gold while King Dude was the headliner tonight.

Gold at EkkoGold is from Rotterdam, Netherlands. They are up for giving us some Post Rock and while entering the stage with some mystique people watch with a certain curiosity that suits with the atmosphere the band is trying to set. Right from the start they get them along, a theatrical act helps them with it. Vocaliste Milena Eva is a charismatic presence. It is not only her voice that do the trick but the mimics give it that extra boost for the live experience. The eyes are living the music and this creates a certain intimacy that elevates them. It is a thing that they can still expand on even, towards the end of the set its becomes a bit repetitive though.

The band is also blessed with some good guitarists that can give you some quality riffs. Take a time to focus on that and come to the core of it, you’ll get the most out of it and see that there is much in this band that gives you reasons to follow them. That being said, they were support but due to a disappointing appearance of the headliner they showed themselves a more worthy main act after all.

Yes, that is true. King Dude has a name and fame here, but does not really seem to live up to everyone’s expectations. The first 20 minutes seemed fine. But soon after that the talking starts. Loads of talking. Or would you say ‘performance-avoiding-behavior’? The reasons? He’s tired, KLM lost his tuner, he lacks whiskey, the need to tell us about racism, the fact that he was wasted (his words!) etc. At first you go with it, but half an hour into we start paying attention to the amount of blahblah versus actual playing and so come the ratio ended up being 50-50 at its most positive counting. So people paid to see him play we thought? Some die-hard fans around seem to care less but we might guess they would be fine even if the guy would lay down and take a nap, which he even suggested to do at one point.

Good, finally a second glass of whiskey was brought and fueled up a few requests were played. Not that he remembered the lyrics, but as an addition to the list of excuses we already heard: he had not played it for ages. Ok… we can only hope that other shows are at least a thousand times better than what we saw tonight, because this was basically a disaster. Fans may take everything from an artist, accept bullshit at all times, but those who are yet in the deciding phase, being a fan or not worth the time, may not be too happy with a show like this. Joking around could work, but this ended in being utterly disgraceful, an insult to the audience.
