Pioneers of Doom should not really need an introduction. 44 years ago they started and anno 2015 we get still releases from them. “Curious Volume” being their latest, which is out now.
With a bunch of classics on your name it is always to question whether a new release can live up to that level or not. Pentagram never really goes out of fashion but they are not always up with the same fame as they had been either. The album we are listening to now, shows that the band has many years of experience on their name but nevertheless releases an album that is very 2015. Sure the old Pentagram feeling is still in there, but modernized. Some playful riffs are to be found all over the release, some refrains are catching your attention just a little bit more, but it may not be a satanic as before. Not really a problem, but the good old fans may be a bit upset that they are not sticking with what made them shine before. New listeners though, will be inspired by the easiness the band brings their music. As if it comes out that easily, it simply flows well. Listen to “The Tempter Push” for example, a song that has lots of beauty to offer.
“Curious volume” is simply a good release. Break your ties with the past and listen to the album as it is now and you will surely like it too. Pentagram still makes great music, just with modernization in mind.
